My 5 Tips To Enjoy a Long Flight

Andar de avião pode ser considerado uma chatice para muitas pessoas, e se o voo tiver mais de 1 ou 2 horas de duração, ou forem precisas 1 ou 2 ligações até chegar ao destino, colocam-se logo as questões normais: "Como é que eu vou passar tantas horas na mesma posição? O que é que vou fazer durante tanto tempo? E se não conseguir dormir? Como serão os passageiros que vão ao meu lado?".
Traveling by plane might be considered a bother for a lot of people, and if the flight has more than 1 or 2 hours, or it takes 1 or 2 connections to get to the final destination, the main questions are always the same: "How am I going to spend so many hours in the same position? What am I going to do for so long? And what if I can't sleep? How will the passengers next to me be like?". 

Há já mais de um ano que 90% da minha vida é passada dentro de um avião, seja a trabalhar ou a viajar como passageira normal. No meu caso torna-se um bocadinho mais fácil porque sou apaixonada por aviação e andar de avião faz parte da minha vida e rotina, mas sou sincera, até eu tenho daqueles dias, quando voo como passageira, em que não me apetece nada passar 5 horas sentada ao lado de uma pessoa desconhecida, que passa a maior parte da viagem ou a ressonar, ou a pedir para se levantar (caso não me calhe o lugar à janela).
For more than a year now 90% of my life has been spent inside a plane, whether it's working or traveling like a normal passenger. In my case it's a little bit easier because I'm passionate about aviation and being on a plane has become part of my life and routine, but I'm honest, even I have those days, when I fly as a passenger, when the last thing I want is to spend 5 hours next to an unknown person that spends the majority of the time snoring, or asking to get up (in case I don't have the window seat).

Ao longo do tempo fui conseguindo adquirir alguns truques e percebendo o que funciona melhor para mim em voos mais longos, e é o que venho partilhar hoje convosco, na esperança de talvez vos poder ajudar um pouco caso tenham algum voo futuramente e também para responder a algumas perguntas que me fazem diariamente: "Mas tu não te fartas de andar de avião? Como é que consegues estar tão fresca depois de estar a voar durante 8 horas?".
With time I managed to get some tricks and realized what works better for me in long flights, and that's what I will share with you today, hoping I can help you a little if you have a long flight very soon and also to answer some questions that I get daily: "Are you not tired of planes yet? How do you manage to look so fresh after flying for 8 hours?"

Durmam o máximo que conseguirem

Sleep as much as you can

Eu sei que para muitas pessoas não é fácil dormir em aviões, ou porque têm medo que algo aconteça, estão ansiosas, ou até porque estão desconfortáveis e não encontram uma posição perfeita. Porém, se estiverem num voo nocturno, não terão outra hipótese se não tentar, e principalmente quando se muda de fuso horário é muito importante tentar regular os horários. Eu pessoalmente tento dormir o máximo tempo possível, seja um voo durante a noite ou durante o dia, porque além de o tempo passar mais rápido, sinto-me menos cansada e frustrada no fim do voo e fico com mais energia para aproveitar o resto do dia quando terminar a viagem.

I know that for most people it's not easy to sleep on planes, either because they are afraid that something happens, they are anxious, or even because they are uncomfortable and can't find the perfect position. However, if you're on a night flight, you probably will want to try, and especially when you're changing time zone is very important to adjust your schedules. Me personally I try to sleep as much as I can, either it's a day or a night flight, because time goes by faster, I feel less tired and frustrated in the end and I get more energy to enjoy the rest of the day when I finish traveling.

Levem o vosso próprio entretenimento

Bring your own entertainment

Caso dormir no avião seja mesmo impossível, pelas razões que mencionei acima, ou se por alguma razão não tiverem sono, eu aconselho sempre a levarem o vosso próprio entretenimento. Hoje em dia os aviões de longo curso já estão equipados com o seu próprio sistema de entretenimento, com música, filmes, séries e até livros. Porém, é sempre boa ideia levar o computador ou o tablet para pôr algum trabalho em dia, ou até para verem a vossa série preferida e ouvir a vossa música (os aviões já têm sistemas nos bancos para carregar os computadores durante o voo) e também levar um livro ou uma revista para se se fartarem de estar a olhar para um ecrã. O tempo passa mais rápido e é bem mais produtivo assim.

In case sleeping is really impossible, for the reasons I mentioned above, or if for some reason you're not sleepy, I always advise to bring your own entertainment. Nowadays long haul planes already have their own entertainment systems, with music, movies, tv shows and even books. However, it's always a good idea to bring the computer or the tablet so you can work, watch your favorite show or listen to your music (planes already have the charging system on the seats so you can charge your computer during the flight) and also taking a book or a magazine in case you are tired of looking at a screen. Time flies by and is way more productive like that.

Always eat during the service

Por mais que eu siga o primeiro ponto, nunca dispenso as refeições dadas durante o voo. Tento estar atenta e acordo sempre que me apercebo que o serviço está a decorrer, pois de barriga cheia sei que vou conseguir dormir melhor. Além disso, depois do voo e se tiverem ligações, não sabem quando terão outra oportunidade para comer ou beber algo (com filas, atrasos e correrias no aeroporto), por isso é sempre boa ideia aceitarem aquilo que as vossas Assistentes de Bordo vos oferecerem durante o voo.

Even though I always follow the first point, I never say no to the meals offered during the flights. I try to be awaken when I know the service is starting, because I know with a full stomach I will manage to sleep better. Besides, after the flight and if you have connections, you never know when you'll have another chance to eat or drink something (with lines, delays and rushing through the airport) , so it's always a good idea to accept what your Flight Attendants offer you during the flight.

Mantenham-se hidratados

Stay hydrated

Além da barriga cheia, o nosso corpo agradece-nos se se mantiver hidratado durante o voo. E este ponto eu aplico sempre, seja como passageira, como a trabalhar. Todos sabemos que o ar do avião seca a nossa pele e não faz muito bem ao nosso organismo, por isso é importante bebermos muitos líquidos e principalmente água. Essa é uma das razões pela qual a crew passa tantas vezes com as bebidas durante os voos, e mesmo se não o fizer (por exemplo em voos durante a noite, de forma a deixar os passageiros dormir), podem sempre dirigir-se às galleys e pedir água para terem durante o voo. Além de beber água, podem também ter convosco uma água termal por exemplo, para colocarem no rosto, pois essa também é uma forma de hidratação.

Besides the full stomach, our body also appreciates if it stays hydrated during the flight. And this one I always follow, either as a passenger or while working. We all know the air on planes dries our skin out and is not very good for our body, so it's very important to drink lots of liquids and especially water. That's one of the reasons why the crew always goes through the cabin with several drink services, and even if they don't do it (for example during night flights, to let the passengers sleep), you can always go to the galley and ask for water during the flight. Besides drinking water, you can have with you a thermal water for example to use on your face, because that's also one way to hydrate.

  Mantenham-se confortáveis e quentes

Stay comfortable and warm

Eu costumo dizer sempre que quando chego ao avião a primeira coisa que faço é tirar os sapatos, calçar umas meias quentes, pôr a almofada no pescoço e tapar-me com uma manta. Os bancos já são desconfortáveis por si só, quanto mais se estivermos 5 horas na mesma posição (e sejamos sinceros, a reclinação do banco na classe económica não é o suficiente para se estar 100% confortável). Por isso, o melhor é irem sempre preparados com a vossa própria almofada para o pescoço, umas meias quentes para não arrefecerem e também uma venda para os olhos, para a luz não vos incomodar caso queiram dormir. Se quiserem podem levar a vossa própria manta claro, mas todos os aviões de longo curso as têm :) Desta forma, estarão prevenidos e poderão tornar o voo um pouco mais confortável dentro do possível. Além disso, costuma ficar frio dentro do avião, e para evitar constipações e dores de ouvidos, o melhor é manterem-se quentes e sem pés frios!

I usually say that as soon as I get to the plane the first thing I do is taking off my shoes, putting on some warm socks, putting my neck pillow on and covering myself with a blanket. The seats are not comfortable all alone, and even worse if we have to be for 5 hours in the same position (and let's be honest, the seat inclination in economy class is not enough to be 100% comfortable). So, the best thing is to always go prepared with your own neck pillow, some warm socks so you don't get cold and also a blindfold, so the light won't bother you if you want to sleep. If you want you can take your own blanket of course, but all long haul planes have them :) This way, you're all set and you can make your flight a little bit more comfortable. Besides that, it usually gets really cold on planes, and to avoid colds and ear pain, the best thing is to stay warm and with no cold feet!

E estas são as minhas cinco dicas para tornarem um voo longo mais fácil e confortável. São pequenos truques que funcionam comigo e que me ajudam de certa forma a tornar os voos mais agradáveis, mas aceito se as mesmas não funcionarem convosco ou acharem algumas delas impossíveis no vosso caso. Somos todos diferentes, logo eu só posso transmitir o que funciona para mim e esperar que vos possa ajudar a vocês também.

And these are my five tips to make a long flight easier and more comfortable. Small tricks that work with me and that usually help me making the flights a little bit more pleasant, but I totally accept if they don't work with you or if you think some of them are impossible in your case. We're all different, so I can only say what works for me and hope it might help you too.

Se, como eu, andam sempre à procura do champô perfeito para acabar com os cabelos estragados, não precisam de procurar mais. Se as vossas raízes têm tendência a ficar oleosas facilmente, mas as pontas ficam rapidamente danificadas e secas, então têm de experimentar esta gama da LÓréal! Chama-se Absolut Repair Lipidium e é constituída por champô, condicionador e máscara.

If you're like me and you're always on the hunt for the perfect shampoo that puts an end to damaged hair, there's no need to look any further. If your roots have the tendency to get easily oily, but your ends get quickly damaged and dry, then you have to try this range by L'Oréal! It's called Absolut Repair Lipidium and it has shampoo, conditioner and mask.

O Complexo Lipidium é exclusivo da L'Oréal e foi desenvolvido para tratar cada zona do cabelo de acordo com o seu grau de danos. Eu notei uma diferença enorme desde que usei esta gama pela primeira vez e agora não quero usar mais nada no meu cabelo! O meu cabelo tem muito volume e é muito difícil de controlar e alisar em casa, mas com este tratamento tenho notado que ele tem estado muito mais hidratado, forte e reestruturado.

I have noticed a huge difference since I started using this range for the first time and now I don't want anything else on my hair! Porém, tenho aprendido ao longo dos anos que mais vale investirmos em produtos mais caros e que realmente façam a diferença do que comprar produtos mais baratos que estragam o nosso cabelo. 

They are not cheap products, but you can opt for buying the smaller packages first if you would like to try it, and later on buy the bigger bottles. However, with time I have been learning that it's better to invest on more expensive products that really make a difference than buying cheap products that damage our hair.
