A few weeks ago I had a small layover in Muscat, Oman. I say it was small because we arrived around lunch time and the next morning really early we had to go back to Jeddah.

Juntei-me a um
I had two options! Whether I would go to my room to sleep the rest of the day or I would enjoy the few hours I had in this new city. I joined a colleague that had the same dilema as I did, we rented a taxi in the hotel (with a friendly price :) and we went to explore the city a little bit! And we didn't regret it a bit! Muscat is a wonderful city!

Obrigada!
First I gotta say this, because is was a very important factor to this little trip! Our taxi driver was amazing! He took us to all the most important places in the city in a few minutes and waited for us in the car, with a lot of patience, because we wanted to photograph every corner and try to see as much as possible. And in the end he charged us a very nice price and was super nice! Thank you!
The first stop had to be the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. I was very curious with this mosque, because it is the most important turistic point in the city and by the pictures I had seen, it looked magnificent. Unfortunately at a certain hour only Muslims can go inside to see the Mosque, so we only got to enjoy the outside.

Although Oman is right next to Saudi Arabia, I learned with this trip that they are two completely different countries! In Saudi Arabia it's not even possible to photograph the mosques (and I have seen some beautiful ones), because it can be taken as an offense. But in Oman we did photograph and walk around in the area, which was by the way very clean and taken care of, with beautiful flowers and grass, transmiting a sense of peace and tranquility.
I didn't want to see anything else after this stop, I could have just lay there on the grass appreciating the beauty of that building forever! Another difference between Oman and Saudi is that in Oman women can go out without the abayas, as long as they don't wear revealing clothes.
After the mosque, our sweet private driver took us on a little tour. First stop: Al Alam Palace. The way to the palace is made along the shore, where it's possible to see tourist walking, full restaurants with a view to the sea, luxurious hotels and of course lots of commerce.
possível visitar o interior do palácio, pois é onde vive actualmente o
monarca Sultan Qaabos.

It's not possible to visit the interior of the palace, because that's where the actual Monarch Sultan Qaabos lives nowadays. Around this square, where the palace is located, you can see all the mountains that surround Muscat.
On the contrary of the quietness of the grand mosque, this area had a lot more movement, with lots of tourists photographing the palace and the forts, which were getting illuminated by now, because it was getting dark.

Next our driver took us to the back of the palace, where it was possible to see the illuminated fort and the reflexion of the lights on the water. The scenery was amazing, right next to the sea, almost feeling a little bit like Portugal, in the middle of Summer. What a nice feeling!

On the way back we went to Muttrah Souq (which means darkness), because the driver insisted we should at least go in to feel the atmosphere of Muscat and because it is really a place full of history. This is one of the oldest markets in the Arab world and it's really worth it to go there with more time, because there's so much to see, from local stores to typical restaurants! The Souq is adjacent to the Muscat Port, where we could see big trade boats and also some cruise ships. Going back to the hotel we also saw a little bit of the outside of the Royal Opera House.
It was a short but sweet stay that felt like a breath of fresh air! Who would say Muscat would be such a beautiful city and that it would remind me so much of my country. They were a very enjoyable few hours and I definitely want to go back there with more time. I want to try their beaches, visit the inside of the mosques and know more of this country's history, which has so many Portuguese influences.
O que acharam de Mascate? Gostavam de conhecer Oman?
What do you think of Muscat? Would you like to know Oman?
