Hello everyone!
Como me foi muito pedido uma rubrica sobre literatura, eu decidi começar hoje. Irei tentar falar sobre literatura aos Sábados e sobre os filmes (se vir alguns durante a semana) aos Domingos. Não sei se se lembram de eu ter dito que tinha ido a uma entrevista na semana passada. Pois bem, recebi ontem a óptima notícia de que fui escolhida para um estágio de Tradução e Retroversão, super importante para a minha área claro. Irei traduzir um livro, logo terei imenso trabalho pois é preciso muita pesquisa e concentração no que estou a fazer. Não é um simples trabalho para a faculdade, há realmente pessoas a contar com o meu trabalho. Fiquei muito feliz, mas irei sempre continuar a arranjar tempo para o blog, até porque este semestre tenho poucas cadeiras na faculdade e o estágio só dura até Janeiro. Além disso o blog já faz parte da minha vida e não pretendo deixá-lo para trás nunca. Boa sorte para mim eheh!
Because a rubric about literature was really asked by you, I decided to start today. I will try to talk about literature at Saturdays and about the movies (if I see some during the week) at Sundays. I don't know if you remember me saying that I went to an interview last week. Well, I got the news yesterday that I was chosen to an internship in Translation, really important to my area of course. I will be translating a book, so I'll have lots of work because it takes a lot of research and focus on what I'm doing. It's not a simple work for college, there are people who are really relying on my work. I was really happy, but I'll always find time to the blog, because this semester I don't have a lot of disciplines at college and the internship is just until January. Besides that the blog is already part of my life and I don't pretend to leave it behind ever. Good luck to me eheh!
Mas agora vamos ao post de hoje, decidi vir falar-vos de uma peça que estive a ler para a cadeira de Inglês na faculdade: Death of a Salesman (1949), de Arthur Miller, ou A Morte do Caixeiro Viajante, em português. Eu li a peça toda em inglês e achei uma linguagem bastante fácil de entender. A linguagem remete aos anos 40 com algumas expressões específicas da altura e uma forma muito particular de algumas personagens se expressarem. Para quem gosta de passar um bom bocado a ler uma boa obra, eu aconselho imenso este livro. Há todo um drama, um enredo e uma intriga, mas ao mesmo tempo podemos ver uma preocupação entre os membros de uma família, o afecto e o respeito demonstrados, que são a maior parte das vezes conjugados com o ódio e a insegurança. Para quem não gosta de ler, já existem vários filmes inspirados na peça.
But let's talk now about the post, I decided to talk about a play I read to English class at college: Death of a Salesman (1949), by Arthur Miller. I read the play in English and I thought it has an easy language to understand. The language remits to the 40s with some specific expressions from that time and a particular way that some characters use to express themselves. To the ones who like to spend a really good time reading a good book, I really recommend this book. There's an entire drama, plot and intrigue, but at the same time we can see concern among the members of a family, the affection and the respect demonstrated, that are most of the time conjugated with hate and insecurity. To the ones who don't like to read, there are already plenty of movies inspired in the play.
Death of a Salesman mostra as diferenças entre os sonhos de uma família de Nova Iorque com a realidade da sua vida. Toda a peça demonstra uma crítica ao Sonho Americano e à sociedade materialista e competitiva dos anos 40. Esta peça fez com que Arthur Miler recebesse o Prémio Pulitzer em 1949 e levou a sua carreira a um outro nível, tendo um sucesso inimaginável na altura. Ainda hoje esta peça é considerada uma das maiores peças americanas escritas. Como em todos os clássicos, muitos dos temas tratados na peça ainda hoje são válidos (a crítica de uma América Capitalista, por exemplo). Quer se concordasse ou não, assim que a peça foi lançada soube-se muito bem qual a ideia de Arthur Miller e o que ele queria transmitir: uma crítica ao Sonho Americano.
Death of a Salesman shows the difference between a New York's family dreams and the reality of life. The entire play shows a critic to the American Dream and to the materialistic and competitive society from the 40s. This play made possible to Arthur Miller the reception of the Pulitzer Award in 1949 and took his career to an all other level, being an unimaginable success at the time. Today this play is still considered one of the greatest American plays ever written. As in all classics, a lot of the subjects mentioned in the play are still valid today (the critic of a Capitalist America, for example). Wether people agreed or not, as soon as the play was released the idea of Arthur Miller was clear, and what he wanted to transmit also: a critic to the American Dream.
Toda a história se centra à volta de Willy Loman, um homem que está sempre a tentar esconder as suas fraquezas e as suas falhas, tentando demonstrar aos outros que é um sucesso. A sua mulher, Linda, é o seu porto seguro, digamos assim, pois aconteca o que acontecer ela está lá para o receber de braços abertos e não há nada que ela não faça para o proteger. Já o mesmo não acontece com Biff e Happy, os seus filhos, que nunca estão em casa e quando voltam só trazem angústia e revolta a Willy, pois por muito que ele tente, nenhum dos dois quer ter sucesso na vida. The entire story is about Willy Loman, a men that is always trying to hide his weakness and his flaws, trying to show to the others that he's a success. His wife, Linda, is his refuge port, let's say that, because no matter what happens she's always there to welcome him with open arms and there is nothing she can't do to protect him. The same can't be said about Biff and Happy, their sons, that are never home and when they return all they bring is anguish and rebellion to Willy, because no matter how hard he tries, not one of them wants to have success in life.
Acho que só lendo mesmo irão entender todos os promenores e ser capazes de sentir o que eles sentem na história. Eu pelo menos, enquanto li, senti o que eles passavam e pensava o que faria no lugar deles. Gostei bastante deste livro, e vocês já o leram? Se não leram, estão a pensar nisso?
I think that just reading is possible for you to understand the details and to be able to feel what they feel in the story. While I read it, I really felt what they were through and thought what would I do in their places. I really enjoyed this book, and what about you, had you read it?
